The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement today (August 3, 2020) on the bhumi pujan ceremony at Ayodhya:

The CPI has always maintained that amity and peace among the people are the most important. Even the Supreme Court had also in its verdict condemned the December 6, 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid describing it as a criminal act.

The Constitution makes it clear that the Indian state is a secular state, which should remain neutral to all religions and faiths. It should not identify with any one of them. The bhoomi poojan ceremony got transformed into a government function with full involvement of the UP government and the Union government. The Prime Minister’s participation has raised serious questions about secular character of the State and the Constitution.

Covid-19 pandemic is raging across the country. The preventive protocol stipulated by the Union Home Ministry rules out religious gatherings. Reports of priests and policemen deployed in Ayodhya testing Covid positive only highlights the risks to human lives.

The Party appeals to the people of India to uphold the secular principles, strictly adhere to the lockdown norms and not permit the people’s religious sentiments to be exploited for partisan political purposes.
