On Wednesday, Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs Jorge Arreaza reported that Venezuelan Consul in Boa Vista, Brasil, Faustino Torella passed away after a long battle against COVID-19.

“I regret to report that after a long battle against COVID-19, today our dear comrade Faustino Torrealba, consul of Venezuela in Boa Vista, where he was infected, passed away,” posted the Venezuelan foreign minister on his Twitter account @jaarreaza.

Arreaza expressed his condolences on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and sent a hug to the consul’s family for such an irreparable loss.

Consul Torrealba was infected with COVID-19 last June in the Brazilian city of Boa Vista and was rushed to Santa Elena de Uairén, Bolívar State, southern Venezuela, and immediately admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) due to lack of medical care in Brazil, as denounced by President Nicolás Maduro and Foreign Minister Arreaza, who also rejected claims by some media and journalists who accused the consul of fleeing the neighboring country.
