He spoke in favour of searching for solutions within the constitutional framework and overcoming differences in Venezuelan society through peaceful dialogue.

gue nglThe group of the European United Left/ Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) strongly condemns the attempted coup in Venezuela with the self-declaration by Juan Guaidó as ‘Interim President’ of the country – a position that does not exist in the current Venezuelan constitution – and the strategy to legitimise a foreign intervention in Venezuela.

GUE/NGL demands strong condemnation of the attempted coup d’état by the Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, the Council and member states, and to respect international law – namely the UN Charter principles – as well as the principle of non-intervention as expressed in their own recent communication regarding the situation on Venezuela.

The already dangerous situation involving Venezuela has suddenly escalated over the last few days, as the legally elected president, Nicolas Maduro, has prepared to start a new term.

On January 21, a small group of Venezuelan National Guard soldiers attempted and failed to carry out a military coup.  It is quite clear that they were encouraged in this effort not only by the Venezuelan right but by reactionary leaders and governments in neighboring countries, and by U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. National Security advisor John Bolton.

Foreign spokesman Bahram Qassemi said Thursday that Tehran supports the government and the Venezuelan nation against any foreign intervention or illegal measures.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the government and the people of Venezuela against any foreign intervention in the internal affairs of that country or any other illegitimate and illegal measure, such as a coup d’état or unpopular movements”, the spokesman said.
